The world in which our churches currently inhabit are really weird.
We are trying in the worst way to make our churches relevant and hip. The sad truth is that we are never going to be 'cool enough' for the world in which we live. The fact is that people love their sins, more than they love Jesus Christ. So because of this...church really does not NEED to be hip or cool. We need to stick with the truth.
Look at this text; 2 Tim 3:1-5:
3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Pay attention to the last part of that sentence. 'APPEARANCE OF GODLINESS.' These are people in the PEWS! Members of your church, but yet they are LOST!
Let me be really honest here, if you pursue your sin more than you pursue Jesus there is more than likely a faulty conversation that is taking place. Yes, you're lost!
The Bible says to 'Examine yourself. Test yourself to see if you be in the faith.' (2 Cor 13:5)
What does that mean? It means that you might possibly be outside of the faith. If you can honestly not be troubled about your sin, and you habitually chase after your sins rather than Jesus, there is a really big problem that needs to be addressed.
We need to wage war on our sins.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
God has given us the weapon to destroy the ideas and the strongholds that are against the things of God. We need to realize that we are not to walk in the flesh, but rather walk in the Spirit of Jesus Christ in order to overcome the junk of this present world.
Ask yourself questions...are you chasing sin? Does YOUR sin really bother you? Do you want to please Jesus more than anyone or anything else? What are you willing to GIVE UP in order to LOVE Jesus Christ better?
This world is just here for a split second, and your life is like a mist (James 4:14), what you are chasing now will determine your eternity. Chase wisely.
